Haha.. Stubby isn't really her name.. I just haven't come up with one, yet XD

Anyways, I got my Gecko all new cage items today. New substrate, new water bowl, new hide. And then to top it all off, I got some wonderful vitamin powder for her food.

And her food of choice? Wax worms. For Gecko's, they're supposed to be used only for treats, because they are very fattening. But you know what, this little gal needs fat.. really badly.. so fat it is!

Oh yes, and I think she may be a girl, now. I was doing some research online, looking at how the male and female Gecko's look... and she's looking like a girl for me. She doesn't have the bulgy tail like the males normally do; but then again, she's so skinny it's hard to tell. But for now, she's a girl. |D

She hasn't eaten yet; but I'll be trying again tonight once it gets later. Leopard Geckos are nocturnal, so she'll be more active, then. If she doesn't eat tonight, I'll force feed her tomorrow. She needs to eat; if she doesn't, she's going to die, end of story. She won't like me prying her mouth open; but I'm hoping if I can just slip a wax worm in there, she'll chomp it and eat it herself. Maybe, hopefully, that will be enough to get her in the mood to eat some more.

Oh yes! And after researching online, I think I may have figured out what happened to her!

Apparently, Leopard Geckos can drop their tails, just like any other Gecko *did not know this*. When they become very very frightened, or attacked, their bodies pinch the vertabrae near the tail to break the tail off. Now know, this is only really used in extreme cases, as dropping the tail puts the Gecko's health at risk.

When a new tail grows, it will not be as long, and is normally shorter and fatter. Also, the new tail will usually not have patterns on it. Most will just be a solid color (like my Gecko's).

But here's the kicker. Leopard Geckos store fat in their tails. Without their tail, they have no fat reserves. This makes it a dangerous feat. A lot of Geckos, apparently, will become very close to starvation as their new tail grows in. Without proper care, the Gecko can easily starve to death.

I believe this may have happened to my Gecko. Her tail is shorter and fatter then a normal Leopard Gecko's, which I picked out immediately when I saw her. My Mommom said that she's "an African Leopard Gecko".. or apparently, that's what the original owner called her. Um.. yeah.. what? I can't seem to find any "African Leopard Gecko's" online... I'm beginning to think that was the owners excuse for this Gecko's poor care.

But her condition sounds like it could be from loosing her tail. It could be the cause of her slow starvation. As for the biting, that could be a result of it as well. If this Gecko was scared or felt endangered enough to drop her own tail and put her life at risk, then the biting could be a result of self defence as well.

Whatever the reason is, the original owner took very poor care of her. ]: And now it's my job to try and make her well.

I've noticed on her, too, that's she's got a lump on her upper lip (which I think was mentioned in my other journal) and her one eye is squinty. I can't tell if there's something wrong with the bottom lid, or if it's just extra skin stuck to the bottom lid... but she licks at it from time to time, and that eye is always winking and squiting.

I'll just have to watch it, I guess. I really don't want to fool with her eye because.. well, it's her eye.

But hopefully she'll eat. I'm going to try and get some pictures of her on the digital camera later on, so I can upload them here, for you all.

OHOHOH. I also think I may have figured out her age. You see, We thought that maybe she was old, which could be why she was so skinny. But then I thought, there's no way! If the owner didn't like her because she bit, why would she keep the Gecko for a long time? Leopard Gecko's can live up to 20 years if cared for correctly. Then, I noticed online that older Leopard Geckos become very spotty, while younger ones have large blotchy markings.

My Gecko has large blotchy markings... therefore, she's probably under or near a year old. ]: I think she would be considered "lavender" which I couldn't find many pictures of online. But she's all brown, pretty much. Light brown with dark brown... not the usual yellow/purple designs of a Leopard Gecko.

But I don't know. It's all speculation from what I've read online. I guess it doesn't matter too much, really; Right now I just need to get her to eat.
